Who is Daniel W. Phillips III, Ph.D. Dr. Phillips is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the Criminal Justice Program Coordinator at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. Dan’s main teaching and research focus is the intersection of mental illness and the criminal justice system. Recently, he published the book entitled Mental Health Issues in the Criminal Justice System. He also has a forthcoming book entitled Probation and Parole: Current Trends which contains chapters on the issue of mental health treatment in corrections. His newest book titled Rural Crime is in the process of being published. Dr. Phillips’ speaking engagements have focused on mental health and criminal justice topics. Dan has trained police officers on how to deal with citizens with mental illness. He has spoken about mental illness and criminal justice at the Academy of Criminal Justice Science, the American Jail Association, the Southern Criminal Justice Association, the Midwest Criminal Justice Association, the Adanta Group, the Anthropologists and Sociologists of Kentucky, the Kentucky Mental Health Counselor’s Association, National Sheriffs’ Association, and Partners in Prevention of Russell County Kentucky. Dr. Phillips is also involved with the editorial process. He has served as special editor of the Journal of Offender Rehabilitation and the Southern Rural Sociology journal. Dan also sits on several journal boards: Deviant Behavior, International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, International Journal of Rural Crime, Journal of Social Science Research, the Journal for the School of Professional Counseling, and the Professional Studies Review. He also produces a quarterly newsletter for the American Jail Association.
